Board Elections

Mountain Shadows will have annual board elections in November.  We have several seats to fill and need neighbors who share the vision of elevating Mountain Shadows to its full potential.  There are many ways to serve on the board including:

- Social Events

- Special Projects

- Clubhouse Coordinator

- Outside Member Liaison

- Membership Coordination

- Covenant Compliance

- Website and Social Media

- Grounds and Maintenance

- Welcome Committee

- Directory

- Security

- and much more

You can expect to serve 3-4 hours a month for the board and perhaps another 1-2 hours additional depending on your area of interest.  Please consider how you can give back to your neighborhood by joining the board!  Contact us for further inquiry.

The following is a note from David Kelman, board president, urging you to consider serving on the board:

THE MSRA BOARD NEEDS RESIDENTS TO STEP UP AND JOIN

Several long-serving board members are stepping down at the end of the year, their retirement being well-earned after years of volunteer service. We need your commitment.
You may wonder if you have enough time. You may think that someone else will surely step up. You may wonder if you have the ability to help where needed. You may be wondering if you will actually be elected.

YOU CAN MAKE THE TIME FOR THIS COMMITMENT, AND YOU MUST
The reality is that holding a board seat does take some time out of your life, but for most it consists of one 1.5-2 hour meeting a month and some small amount of side work on whatever duties are in your corner at the moment. It is a commitment, but a manageable one. While we appreciate residents who aid the neighborhood in any way, you must also understand that nothing is a full substitute for service on the board.

DO NOT MAKE THE MISTAKE OF ASSUMING SOMEONE ELSE WILL STEP UP FOR YOU
The main attribute that separates safe, desirable communities from decaying communities is that of resident commitment. There are no shortcuts or ways around this fact. If residents do not step up, the association will be unable to handle security, maintenance and improvements, facilities and pool management, and community events simultaneously.
Treading this path, community facilities will suffer, coordination will lapse, and our neighborhood will become an easier target for crime and unscrupulous investors. This will affect more than just your pocketbook.
On the other hand, we have seen that an active, engaged, fully-staffed board forms the kernel of a larger body of residents pushing community, neighborhood improvements, vigilance, and communication. About fitting into that kernel…

THE MSRA NEEDS COMPETENT OVERSIGHT, AND YOU FIT THE BILL
You no doubt have an important role in your day job where you demonstrate expertise and shoulder important responsibilities. You might be surprised at the variety of skills the board utilizes in its duties. Do not make the mistake of thinking that you do not have the relevant skills to help. Yet the most important attribute you have is that you are a successful, competent, responsible adult, and you are invested in this community.
Understand that the reality of the MSRA is that much of what the board accomplishes is relatively unglamorous yet critically important (but we’ll try to enumerate our 2014 accomplishments at the annual meeting). When these duties happen, you may not notice much of it. When they do NOT happen… you notice. If you don’t step up to the commitment, the neighborhood will feel the effects. You must take that step…

WILL YOU BE ELECTED? THE PARADOX
If you do not step up to the ballot, no one will step up to the ballot, no one will fill these important board seats, and we will go down the wrong path. Currently, we have NO ONE new who has stepped up. If a great number of you find yourselves moved by this email, and we do end up with a surplus of residents committing to serve, we can no doubt hash this out at the annual meeting. Perhaps at that point some of the surplus will be happy to step aside or volunteer in a smaller capacity, or maybe you will all be happy to remain on the ballot and see what happens. That’s a bridge we can cross when we come to it, but right now we are not yet moving down the road.

WE NEED YOU TO COMMIT
